Overview
The TI-30XS MultiView is my favorite scientific calculator. It comes with all the standard features that you would expect on a scientific calculator and much more. The button layout is similar to most TI calculators and they are organized in a way that makes finding what you are looking for pretty easy.
Although it is slightly less capable than the TI-36X Pro, the TI-30XS has plenty of features for a scientific calculator. The features that it lacks, that the TI-36X Pro has, are almost all features that you would normally only find on a graphing calculator.
This calculator currently costs less than $15 which I think is a great deal. You won’t find many calculators that will give you this type of functionality for that type of price. I would definitely say that it is worth it to spend the extra $5 to get this calculator instead of settling for a totally basic scientific calculator.
Capabilities
MATHPRINT
The screen has a four line display that gives you plenty of room for basic calculations, and just enough room to navigate the menus inside some of the more complicated apps. As on most newer TI calculators these days this one has MATHPRINT. This means that the calculator can print expressions the way that they might appear in a textbook or hand written. The two photos below show the same expression, written first in classic mode and then in with MATHPRINT turned on.
X and Y Table
This calculator, like almost all scientific calculators, doesn’t really have many hidden menus with extra apps. Most of the features can be accessed by pressing one or two buttons. I would say that the most advanced app that this calculator has is the table function. This basically allows you to type in a function and then an X and Y table will be generated. You can scroll through the coordinates and even tell the table where you want to start the X value at so that you can jump to a specific place.
Exact Numbers
Even if you already have a graphing calculator you may not have this next feature that the TI-30XS has. It can simplify expressions and keep them in radical and/or fractional form. This is probably the feature that really sets this calculator, the TI-30XS, and the TI-36X Pro, apart from most calculators. There are some graphing calculators that can do this but not all of them can.
Below are some examples of how the calculator can simplify fractions and radicals without putting them into decimal form.
And of course if you just want the decimal answer you can just press the [◀▶] key right above [enter] and your answer will be converted into a decimal.
This calculator does much much more than the things that I’ve described here. What I have shown are just the main main things that this calculator does that really set it apart.
In conclusion, for most students or people using a scientific calculator at home/work, the TI-30XS MultiView would be our first pick. It has all the essential features but not so many features that you will get confused. It does it’s job very well and nothing more.
