Overview
The TI-30X IIS keeps things very simple but is still able to provide you with a good amount of functionality. This calculator is perfect for middle school classes, and late elementary classes. Anything higher level than that, and it may start to fall short though. But for around only $10 you could have a calculator that would put someone through middle school, or work very well for a home office.
This calculator has all of the basic features of a scientific calculator. It does lack some of the features that the more advanced scientific calculators have. For $10 though, this calculator will not disappoint, and it does have a few features that will set it apart from other simple scientific calculators.
Capabilities and Features
Display
One major feature that sets the TI-30X IIS apart from most other simple scientific calculators is its two-line display. The top line is a low-res pixelated display for typing in your expressions. It works well for reading the more complex things you may have to enter like exponents and sine functions. On the bottom, you will see a display that is just like any classic 4 function calculator. This is where your answers will be. It does have a place on the bottom line for decimals and exponents, but that’s it. You won’t be getting anything like answers in fractional or radical form like you might on a TI-30SX MultiView.
Functions
You can see all of the functions of the calculator on or above the buttons you can access them by pressing 1 or 2 buttons. There is only one line that is capable of displaying information other than numbers and that means that you won’t have to go digging around in any menus to find the function you are looking for. See the image below of the keyboard to get an idea of the things this calculator can do.
You will be able to do basic math functions as well as sin, cos, tan, exponents, logs and more. Of course, you can also type out long expressions and the calculator evaluate using order of operations. You can fill the whole screen with one expression and then keep typing and the calculator will simply scroll over and let you continue.
If you’re this far in the article and still haven’t just forked over the $10 for the TI-30X IIS you may want to check out something more advanced. The TI-30XS MultiView and the even more capable TI-36X Pro are only about $3 and $10 more expensive. They’re way more capable and will take you through higher level math than the TI-30X IIS will.
Power and Build
You won’t have to worry about charging or changing the batteries on the TI-30X IIS. First of all, using the calculator uses very little battery. Second of all, the calculator has a solar panel to help provide power. It is very likely though that you will go through using this calculator without ever replacing the battery
You can purchase the TI-30X IIS in a rainbow of different colors, but prices may vary from the basic $10 black model. The TI-30X IIS comes with a slide on, protective case to cover the screen and the buttons. The calculator is easily durable enough to be fine after being thrown around in a backpack or dropped off a desk.
